Independent Neighborhood News & Talking Points

With the turn of the season (finally) to Spring/Summer, the strawberry crop is finally worthy of some attention. Safeway’s selling them at pretend sale prices, the farmers’ markets are filled wth strawberry booths, and you can buy yourself a flat of berries on select corners throughout Willow Glen.
Depending on your perspective, this might be a cool part of our neighborhood. Strawberries on every corner? Who can complain? Actually, SJPD tends to frown on the practice, since a business license (aka tax payment) is required of these merchants, and most usually forget that detail. The berries look good, though! And they are usually cheaper than Safeway.
Tell us where you buy your berries!

So many strawberry crops are sprayed with various chemicals. We buy ours at Whole Foods to avoid the “nasties” one might get elsewhere. I’ve often wondered about those “corner sellers” … I might consider purchasing those berries if I knew they were organic, but I’m not sure how one could verify that they truly are even if the seller answers in the affirmative.
Anyway, it’s organics for us; I’ve heard tell that with fruit it’s especially important to purchase “safe” strawberries.
[...] It might a little late in the strawberry season to find too many more opportunities to buy them fresh on a corner in WG, but it’s cherry season now! At least it is until Tuesday. [...]
