In conjunction with Operation: Care and Comfort …
Since April 2003, the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has shipped more than 300,000 pounds of care packages for distribution to Marine, Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard personnel deployed in the conflict regions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Students at Booksin School are joining the effort this week, collecting Halloween Candy to be sent to troops overseas.
Trick or Treat for the Troops
Support Our Troops with Your Extra Halloween CandyMrs. Braunstein’s fifth grade class is organizing a ’sweet’ way to support our troops. Bring your extra Halloween candy to Booksin during Halloween week. They will donate it to Operation Care and Comfort of the Santa Clara County Red Cross who will send it to our Troops over the Holidays.
They will be collecting candy through Friday, November 2.
The Red Cross also needs cash to help cover postage for the care packages. If you would like to donate cash, please send it to your child’s class in a labeled envelope, or drop it off in the office. Checks can be made to ARC Operation Care and Comfort or ARCOCC.

Mrs. Braunstein reports that her class had a HUGE response to their call for Candy for the Troops! Last week they collected 800 pounds of candy and $115 towards postage for Operation Care and Comfort!!!
If you still have candy you would like to donate, Mrs. Braunstein says she will be happy to make another delivery this Friday.
Drop candy and donations off at Room 28 (next to the library).
Thank you to everyone who contributed to Booksin’s first “Trick-or-Treat for the Troops” project. Students collected more than 1000 pounds of candy, which will be rolled into care packages to be sent to service members stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other conflict regions.
Operation Care and Comfort will be putting care packages together on Nov 18 and Dec 2 at the American Legion Hall (1504 Minnesota Avenue), from 10:00 am until finished both days.
Nothing signals success like a follow-up story in the WG Resident …
The article includes some great quotes from the adults behind the project, and some additional history of Operation Care & Comfort
